Nice comment and videos, thanks. Since you showed a video of Rambo part 2, it reminded me that one of my all time favorite movie lines is in this movie. Its when the Colonel tries to recruit Rambo to go back to Vietnam for a special mission. Rambo says to the Colonel, "One question sir, do we get to win this time?"

My dad served in the army in during the Korean War. Though he was fortunate to serve stateside, Fort Ord. The base office needed someone who could type. My dad raised his hand and that kept him from going to Korea.

Nice to hear about the Dads. Everyone who serves their Country is special and deserves our respect. Memorial Day means a lot to me. My father was a Chief Electricians Mate aboard the Destroyer Escort Samuel B. Roberts. This small ship was part of the Battle off Samar, an unlikely victory in which relatively light U.S. warships prevented a superior Japanese force from attacking the amphibious invasion fleet off the large Philippine island of Leyte. This destroyer escort, along with the handful of destroyers, destroyer escorts (nicknamed Tin Cans because they were so small), and escort carriers of the unit called "Taffy 3", was inadvertently left alone to fend off the main Japanese fleet of heavily armed Japanese battleships (including the Yamato, the largest battleship ever built with nine 18 in. guns), cruisers, and destroyers in this crucial action off the Island of Samar, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf of October 1944. The Roberts' main armament was torpedoes and two five in. guns. Steaming aggressively through a gauntlet of incoming shells, Samuel B. Roberts scored one torpedo hit and numerous gunfire hits as she slugged it out with larger enemy warships before finally being sunk. My father was one of 89 sailors killed. After the battle, Samuel B. Roberts received the nickname "the destroyer escort that fought like a battleship." The heroic action of these ships saved MacArthur's invasion ships packed with soldiers. The Japanese fleet took numerous casualties and withdrew thinking they were up against a much larger force. This action, probably the last large naval surface battle the world will ever see, has been featured on several TV specials and in the book, The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.
