The cafe interior scene is nearly impossible.  It's probably not even a real cafe.  Don't waste any time on this location.

As I was never an obedient guy (sorry @airtommy!), I took liberty to check on that hint a bit as Miami Squeeze and One way ticket have unknown gallery scenes.

Kane Concourse is a section only two blocks long on Bay Islands and was known for its galleries in the late 80 and early 90s.

Upon further scrutiny of the scenes, I have dismissed the chance that MV has ever filmed there, because:

1. Miami Squeeze: this is either an art gallery posing as restaurant (most likely given the art on the walls) or a real restaurant posing as art gallery. Either way, there is an open section outside with an white overhead structure. On Kane concourse all galleries or shops are located like in an old western movie - front to front, no gaps or yards in between.

2. One way ticket: this looks like a real gallery with high ceilings and a small green frontyard on a busy street in front of the entrance. No such wide frontyard possible on Kane Concourse either.

So, for me that location hint is a wash for both episodes. But maybe @haroldg49 will respond sometimes, so we can hear how he has heard about that hint.

P.S. of course I was on the ground too and "walked" up and down Kane Concourse on Google Street View and counterchecked all available restaurant and gallery information with door structures/heights of buildings (vs. One way ticket) and frontyard possibilities (vs. Miami Squeeze&One way ticket).

Another unknown location(s): the hospital(s).

The hospital scenes: when Castillo is delivered in, the hallway does not necessarily look like a hospital. I have never seen such narrow hallways in hospitals, as they will have trouble get round corners with the patient beds. I added a pic from inside University of Miami hospital (was the Biscayne General Hospital earlier that we see in the exterior shot at the end of this episode) to compare the width of normal hospital hallways with what we see here.

Thus, I suspected an ordinary office with reception instead. But one of the doors says "EX3" which indicates an examination room. That could fit with a hospital or a beauty clinic. There is no proof of a hospital except in the final scenes where Crockett enters Marty´s room, but that does not look like an ER, rather like a normal station bed?. The curved glassbrick wall with two elevators and hospital-like colors could be anywhere. The floor in the scene in front of the glass wall is carpet. Not likely to find that floor in a hospital where carpet is usually forbidden due to germs and bacteria (cleaning issue) and low endurance to many visitors.

NEW LOCATION FOUND: THE CLUB/THEATER of Ricky De Maria

My further scrutiny on that location has increased the likelihood that this location is indeed the Cameo Theater on 1445 Washington Ave, as originally suspected by @C Glide, I would say to 99% as there are again too many matches and 2 vintage interior pics confirmed it 100%.

Matches:

  • Dimensions of the Cameo Theater (it is a 2 story building and has/had a balcony). What we see in the episode is an upper balcony area with a lower ground level theater that roughly matches the Cameo´s size. UPDATE: I found a late 1980s pic of the interior theater and it exactly matches what we see in the episode when Tubbs and Joey enter the theater. Also the pink/turquoise colors and the pattern on the inner wall facing Espanola Way fits 100%.
  • The Cameo was used in the late 80s as a club for punk and heavy metal and was very dirty and filthy with graffiti and drugs
  • The glass brick wall is there and it matches in horizontal size (15 bricks). It covers two stories, so that the cafe we see could be on the lower level and the projector room on the second level just above
  • The dimensions of the projector room we see including the rounded edges of the room, the outside door and the rectangular window behind De Maria. The sunlight seems to come in only below which corresponds with the glass brick wall starting in lower half of the second floor.
  • The high door we can see on the right of the theater space could fit to the high doors seen on Espanola Way outside
  • The scene where Louis was abducted, was filmed on Collins Court next door (hard to believe that they only shot this small scene there; no other scene in this episode was filmed in South Beach)
  • The interior glass brick wall in the cafe is 10x15 blocks. (It is much smaller than the one on the facade though which is 15 blocks wide but much higher. I struggled to understand this until I found an interior picture from the Cameo mezzanine that has the same 15x10 block window).

What does not fully match but is explainable:

  • The two doors behind Ross and his aid (could have been changed, the Cameo was closed by authorities in the 90s and remodeled)
  • The door behind Maria when he is tasered, would be facing Washington Ave side. Possible Explanation: this is the door to a very narrow maintenance room between the projector room and the big glass brick facade. There is daylight coming in before that door from below. That matches with the fact that the big glass block window facade starts only in the lower half of that floor Level as we can see from the exterior pics.

The interior pics I found are from the Facebook Cameo Theater - Hardcore Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/59465044407. Two are posted here.

The interior 1980s photos referred to here http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/3074 and supposed to at the top of the Miami News Times article https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/a-cameo-role-6358015 are not there, at least I can´t find them.

Maybe some of you other buffs @daytona365 @airtommy @Matt5 @miamijimf can jump in with more interior pics to post here? But alltogether I would say there is no doubt on this location anymore....!?

ENJOY!

P.S. On Dec 23 1988 "Danzig" played in the Cameo and on 13 January 1989 "Megadeath" (this episode filmed 5-13 January). I guess that also fits to the music style and interior "finesse" we see in the episode ...

UNKNOWN LOCATION; THE HOSPITAL

This is tougher than I thought. Usually hospitals are numbered and don´t get torn torn or massively remodelled, rather extended.

Here is what I have:

Derived from the episode we have 3 major clues:

  • the distinctive interior design with the corners and the arches above the reception and the elevators and the two parallel wooden frames on the reception table
  • was a brandnew building: the elevators e.g. look brand new and have a digital display of floors, not a array of analog ones that are lighted from behind. Also, the door signs look very modern even for today´s standards
  • (biggest clue that will be visible from above or outside) the slim windows with the broad opening=glass wall in between (this glass brick wall is approx. 2m away from the window front, thus I assume it looks different from the outside but must be a broad opening due to lots of sunlight coming in through the glass bricks.

Going with these clues (no decisive returns on Google picture search with various key words) and starting with all hospitals in Greater Miami (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hospitals_in_Florida)

I narrowed it down to three on my shortlist (all others do not have any slim windows patterns that fit to what we see):

  1. Baptist Hospital Kendall/SW 87 Street, close to the water plant in that episode. See picture of a potential similar building part
  2. Doctor´s hospital Coral Gables. See picture, less matching than the first one
  3. Miami Heart Institute Miami Beach (gone now): that is a special case. As an older picture shows there is a building that potentially has slim windows with a similar distance/daylight source in between, but this hospital was built in 1984, bought by Mount Sinai in 2000, closed and sold in 2012 and remodelled into a Ritz Carlton luxury hotel in 2017-2020. This is the rare case of a hospital gone. It was at 4701 N. Meridian Ave, Miami Beach and thus close to MB locations (we now know that they filmed in the Cameo Theater).

Special clue: when Crockett enters Castillo´s ICU room, there is a window display with a partial sign visible. Could be a pictogram, then a "M" (sure) and the start of a T-bar of a "T" (not sure). MT Mt. Sinai? Mount Sinai I have excluded, as it does not have slim windows and they filmed in other episodes there (Everybody´s in showbiz, Line of Fire, Amen..send money) and the interior looks completely different.

What do you guys think? Any other ideas? Maybe it was a rehab center or beauty clinic?

They are in the Cameo Hardcore facebook group I referred to. Just have to go to the "show all pics" button and scroll down a lot to find them. The interior shot from the same position as in MV was posted there twice from the same person who was a frequent punk customer in the 80s and 90s. Just in case you need it for location site updating...

Today, it looks completely different and we would not have been able to match it ... back then, it was filthy and run down and there was an 10x15 blocks glass wall inside in the mezzanine, that was the "bar" we saw inside with Joey and Ricky de Maria.

P.S. Rugged Edge, the punk band from "Line of Fire" played concerts there as well in 1988/89 several times.

THE HOSPITAL LOCATION: EXACT SPOT FOUND?

MIAMI CARDIAC AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE (WITHIN BAPTIST HOSPITAL), 8900 N Kendall Drive

This unknown location baffled me, so I took another look and I found a potential place with a high probability. It´s within the Baptist Hospital compound that ended up on my short list above in this thread, it´s the Cardiac and Vascular Institute to be exact. Still circumstancial evidence, but a good one.

1. The Institute was opened on 1st October 1987 and the building with the potential location was not on the 1986 historic aerial but on the 1994 one. What is we see in the episode is a brand new facility.

2. there is a potential match with two small windows (approx. 1m wide) and a bigger space (bigger window) in between that exactly matches the distance we see in the episode (5m from the outer side of one window to the inner side of the other plus 1m for the second window; Google shows the scale on the lower right). Remark: this hospital is the only one in Miami Dade that has these small (1m) windows, all others do not. I´ve checked every single one of them.

3. The light source in behind the glass block window in the middle seems to come from a bigger window in the middle but not as big as the glass brick wall

4. The potential location is located on a 2nd or 3rd floor and right of a building part that could house an elevator like we see in the episode.

5. The institute building is part of the Bapist Hospital that is only 2km away from the plant 31 location (the scenes there are quite short and the whole VICE  team is there with the same clothes on- same day according to filming schedule - so they might have used a nearby hospital location).

6. The Institute could also explain the narrow aisles and the carpet floor, as it is not only a normal hospital but also a research institute with respective variations from normal hospital features.

I haven´t found any old pictures to be sure. The Institute has been renovated/expanded in 2017 for 100m USD, so a lot has changed internally.

I know this is not as sexy and sure as we are used to, but it´s all I got now and I will dig but so far it´s the best lead we got.

What do you think?

Recently I have observed a lack of response or contribution to location topics in general. Maybe that’s just summertime but in case nobody else than me is interested in finding the last 27 (my count) locations of the series, just let me know and I‘ll refrain from posting. It takes too much time for just presenting cases to myself :)

Very interesting theory!  I'm not sure how we could check this out, even after the pandemic it's probably limited access.

I know that it’s hard to verify but that part of that particular hospital is the only one left where there are (1) such small windows (2) in the right distance and angle (flat wall, the Doctor‘s Hospital in Gables has a round structure around these windows). I could exclude the Miami Heart Institute in Miami Beach although it was torn down years ago by watching the two Burn Notice episodes that were filmed there inside in several spots and there was no match as it looked completely different in style, and dimensions.

THE INDOOR GUN RANGE: A VALID SUSPECT

I suspect that the gun range we see in this episode was not a publicly accessible one. First, it looks too fancy, too small and too clean, second: there are no warning signs or any reminders about weapons handling and security that one would suspect on a range where everyone can fire his guns. I checked all public gun ranges in Miami Dade and all were full of signs next to the lanes and looked different plus had a shop attached.

So, I checked the official law enforcement gun ranges in Florida. There is a full list. Out of 133, only one is indoor and a good match: the one of Miami PD at 350 NW 2 Ave, Miami (see partial list below). This is also quite close to the teaser locations in this episode. Although I have not found any historic range lists, I assume this one at Miami Police was always there, at least in 1989.

Very good work.  I've been to one or two civilian indoor gun ranges in Miami and you are right - they all had shops close by selling guns etc.  I doubt this is a real range.  I've never seen a range, indoor or outdoor, that had exposed metal piping anywhere in the line of fire due to the danger of misfires and ricochets.

What do you mean with "no real range" and "metal piping"? It has just the normal metal range slides (6 lanes, supplier logo visible) and all other typical features of a real range, like the roof. Do you think they built a range just for one scene?

I have the sad duty to downgrade this location from strong suspect to NOT IT. The search will go on....

Pity me that I did not cross check with historic aerials. This lot was empty in 1986 and also in 2007. The current police training building was built between 2007 and 2010 because it´s on 2010 aerials.

@airtommy said I should not waste my time to look for this small art gallery/cafe location.

Well, I would say there is a good chance to find it. Usually, 3 significant hints to indicate where or what to look for is enough. Here we have 5. Not bad for such a small scene with only two camera angles.

  1. the significant diagonal window at the corner which is for sure reflected and visible on the outside or from above
  2. the inner yard with a smaller building on the other side
  3. some roof connection between the two buildings. We don´t see whether this "bridge" is small or wide (maybe it covers the whole alleyway)
  4. the slim vertical window behind the guests lets us briefly see that there is a street or a blocked background with some green bushes and traffic behind it that is not too far away (i.e. looks only one ped walk distance in between
  5. the sunlight and the shadows indicate that the diagonal corner and the camera movement is towards the south. This was filmed 5-13 January with low sun, thus the building vis a vis must be quite low in order to let the sun into the yard at a low angle. This means the street behind the slim window is running north-south.

If we combine all these 5 clear clues with the assumption that this location was a small art gallery that was decorated as a restaurant, we can narrow it down to (1) all areas around known locations of this episode and (2) to all areas in Miami where art galleries usually are (e.g. Lincoln Rd, Miami Design District, Miami Beach, Kane Concourse, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables around Coral Way).

Here is my simple sketch what we are looking for.

P.S. of course, I have already searched for it and not found it. Maybe others want to join?
