I always thought the famous closing shot of the opening montage was filmed from Watson Island. I thought CGlide or DanJ had determined that many years ago. I thought I remember them saying that the shot was taken before the taller bridge to the Port was constructed, which is why we don't see it. But now I see on CGlide's site that it was filmed from Dodge Island/Port of Miami. Am I wrong? Was this always known? Actually yes it was filmed on Port of Miami/Dodge Island you can see from the proximity(near the bridge) - Don’t know what that tells you about the shot I posted (must be Watson Is). Matt5
I‘d say yellow (Opening credit montage), purple (Pilot Only shot).

The pilot-only shot is very wide angle, with Freedom Tower included, maybe tough to re-create with an ordinary camera? What I find strange about the Pilot shot is that they used stock footage it is a very Miami Vice looking shot with the colors etc . But with the absence of the Wachovia building it was not filmed for the Pilot. They rarely used stock footage of Miami (LA yes) Im thinking some of the aerial Port of Miami /Cruise ship shots we saw in the closing montage looked quite old and I couldn’t recall seeing the Wachovia building then either. From “Leap of Faith” on Port of Miami by the bridge showing the rough angle we see in the opening credit montage for the whole 5 years.
Dadrian
Totally unrecognizable today, right? So many new buildings. I couldn’t even see the Suntrust building from the causeways in 2016.

Yes, that's a perfect match! The spacing and angles are just right.
airtommy
From his pics it seems that CGlide has nailed the location where Leon walks out of the restaurant to his car, but he doesn't list the exact address so I want to clarify it. http://www.miamivicelocations.org/page6.html Leon walks out of 1454 Washington Avenue with his bag of fried chicken. He turns right and walks south. Leon passes a produce store at 1452 Washington Ave. Crockett is sitting in a genuine Ferrari Daytona the only time in the series: Then he walks past an alley with a red gate. That alley has changed. The gate is now gone and the fire escape stairs have been replaced with a more substantial permanent staircase. The same spot today: In "Nobody Lives Forever" Izzy is selling shoes in front of that produce store until C&T drag him into the alley. One of the cool things about this scene is the long time between camera cuts. This one is a very long clip - about 13 seconds. Tubbs is loading his shotgun and then Crockett asks "How much time we got?" and then Tubbs says "25 minutes". They start about at 30th Street and go south a long way, maybe 5 blocks, very tough to tell.
airtommy
It looks like a good match to me. 2nd floor window shape and spacing looks right notice the wide arches over the ground floor windows/doors Edited April 22, 2019 by airtommy 2

Matt5
I was thinking about the last scene in this episode shot on the I95 Julia Tuttle Cswy near 36th St headed to the beach, the Pilot was shot from March to April 1984. Then one of the first scenes from “Heart of Darkness”, the second filmed episode, also shot on the same stretch from July 12-July 25, 1984, This Causeway was also featured in “ The Fix” and some Ferrari drive scenes in various episodes including “Forgive Us Our Debts”. I’m going back today so will look for the other ones. This stretch of Biscayne has seen some demolition and new buildings but on the other hand there are a lot of old buildings there still from during and before our show. The only one it could be would be this before some renovation perhaps, it has some of the features of above but not all. https://goo.gl/maps/iwe7vBgMBitYavv89 Edited May 12, 2019 by Matt5
Matt5
In passing Miami Beach a few times in the last month I have noticed the Miami Beach Resort and Spa Hotel (the famous Doral) on Millionaire’ Row at 4833 Collins Avenue has been closed and the driveway boarded up on both sides. This famous hotel was featured in background scenes and in the opening credits of the Pilot as well as in the opening teaser montage of “Trust Fund Pirates”. Amazing history. No doubt part of why it was chosen to appear in the Pilot opening credits.(Rear beach scene in the 4800 block looking north). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Beach_Resort_and_Spa Edited June 11, 2019 by Matt5 1

The Convention Center / Hyatt doesn't fit IMO. It rather looks like a parking garage or something. Who knows if it's Miami at all.
