Can Miami vice rise from its ashes ?

i love that series a lot and i would like to thanks all the actors who participated in the series again (while being conscious that fame may be heavy maybe) . i've been thinking about the thing , can Miami vice rise from its ashes ? the main problem seems to reside in the fact that the center of the series are the two cops and in opposite to others series like for example Law and order where the center of the series is the enigma , in MV the center of the series the two cops can't be replaced and de facto sentences the series to redundancy . the problem is simple and complicated at the same time , simple because we know it some change should be created inside the series but complicated at the same time because a change would implement not to have Crockett and Tubbs all the time in the foreground , would it be possible ? for example in France the series is called "Deux flics à Miami (two cops at Miami)"

I'd like to think it could be revised, and brought back from the ashes for a TV movie, but don't think the magic would be there for a weekly series in 2010.Many things have changed in the world.I think it was the perfect series for the perfect time period (the 80's), but at thier age, I don't think it would be too exciting for a series in 2010.It's hard to recreate something so perfect for it's time.I think I'll just worship it the way that it is.(I'd love to see cut scenes, and I'd love to see behind the scenes stuff from the period, and perhaps a TV movie)

i think a rebirth would definitely implement a change , i mean a MV today wouldn't be the exact MV we saw in the 80s

If they hire me as the director, tony d. as the writer, and hire me as the cast director too, you can bet, MV will be a blockbuster.

Can't be done.............................................Times have changed, the premise for the series of drug smuggling would have to change a bit as well as the technology(s) used to avert them. This makes it seem improbable on so many levels. As for the music...there is no great music today. Creativity and perfomance is now left to the money making machine and top forty crap built by the machine. No artists have great time essence music that would fill the gaps in drama like the tunes that were so specially selcted in the original MV series.Sorry but I believe that it would be best left as the original series which we all love and respect as we have seen the debachery of the movie which many of us feel was not very complimentary of the original series, whatever your personal opinions may be, varied that they are.Lets all just enjoy the dvd's and the original series.

For the music i totally agree with you when you say there are only crap music nowadays but if you watch the 2006 movie you'll see that you aren't forced to use nowadays tunes all the time , see CSI : Miami they use a The Who song in the beginning . i think Miami vice has a potential even without the actors used then , police investigation themes are always selling

I think that it would be great if there were a one-off TV movie filmed with the original cast and if it were to be completed in the same vein as the original episodes rather than the later movie effort by Mr Mann. I disagree regarding current music ... there are some brilliant newer musicians out there plus there are those from the 80s who are still making a good living in the industry who could write something especially for the episode.

everybody wants a revival of the series with Don and PMT but (maybe i'm wrong) each time i see Don Johnson i have the feeling he says to me Dude why don't you let me alone a bit with Miami vice  . i think they (original actors) gave enought to the series , don't you think :confused:concerning music they are great musicians nowadays but most of the nowadays tunes are made by "money machines" just watch the number of Lamborghini and Bentley and featuring in videos clips , the kind of things the 80s artists would have vomited

"Miami Vice" was perfect for the 80's and that's where it belongs. That magic can never be recreated and I don't think anyone should try. Some of you might remember a show called "New York Undercover" It was often compared to Vice because of it's use of music. However the music used was rap, hip hop, etc. Fitting for that show but still very different from Vice. The 80's had a specific "feel" to it and if Vice had continued and wanted to remain fresh and current it would have eventually had to surrender the 80's music and at that point it would cease to be the Vice we all know and love. You can't recreate perfection.

I have to say yes and no. Let me explain. I say a big yes in content. Let's face it, illegal drug use has not gone anywhere; I read books about drug cartels, drug kingpins, etc. quite a bit. I guess it is an offshot of my love for the show, but I digress. If anything, we could add meth labs in the mix as an added illegal drug, along with Ecstasy. Miami is still huge in its role as an entry point for cocaine and other illegal drugs. The mafia and organized crime may seem like it is much weaker now, but in some aspects it is stronger and more varied. Not only do you still have the Italian mafia, Cosa Nostra, but also the Triad, Yakuza, Russian, the list goes on. The "illegal" porn industry has not gone anywhere; in fact, the porn industry is bigger with the advent of the internet. Let's not forget prostitution either. The internet and illegal activities connected to it could the focus of an episode as well. Terrorist activity could certainly be a multi-episode arc in post 9-11 Miami. Our two favorite vice cops could wear very similar clothes. How many movies and television shows set in Miami have you seen where at least one character wears a nice blazer with a tshirt? And Tubbs' suits are always stylish.Automobile wise, I can see Crockett in a Ferrari 430 or the new 458. Tubbs' Caddy is still a great ride in my eyes. Now the music is where I say no. Like many of you, it was such a defining part of the show. I have often said Miami itself was a character in the show, and I think the music was as well. Jan Hammer could provide instrumentals for the show, but as far as importing popular songs of today, well, one would really have to dig deep to find tunes that fit. That is just my humble two cents' worth.

I'm sure MV would have been even more popular than it was. Love it here:dance2:

The 80s were cool because we weren't scared of doing (totally) new things at that time . i remember myself going to parties with flashy pink or flashy yellow t-shirts such things that could have appeared like mental issues just few years before , there were so much examples like haircuts , you see 80s haircuts there are more unbelievable the ones than the others , remember these T-shirts too which were totally open on the sides , Crockett's T-shirt under the blazer was totally new too some even say he invented the style . if we want to see a new MV one day , it's not MV that has to rise from it's ashes but the spirit there was at that time . if you expect an exactly similar MV like we saw in the 80s i think it can't be done because it isn't the 80s (hope being clear enough ,lol)

You'd also see that nearly everyone is wearing a hoodie and ED HARTLEY skull shirts and clothes. Everything would be void of color, and would look dark, depressing, and unimaginative.I won't look like all the cookie cutter, dress the same as everyone else people out there. I dress the VICE WAY. ELEGANT.

I'm not, in any way, saying Vice is dead. The fact that this site exists, with such enthusiasm, 25 years later is proof positive of that! Many of us are still doing the things you remember form the 80's, today. There are 80's parties. Some of us still sport the clothes and the haircuts. We drive the cars and the boats. Hell, the show even inspired some of us to a career in law enforcement! All I'm saying is don't try to recreate it. Watch it, enjoy it, and respect it for what it was and always will be in our minds and in our hearts. That's why we're all here. That's what this site is all about.

I have to say yes and no.

I kind of have similar opinion here - yes and know... or maybe "I don't know", LOL. Speaking about reunion movie or show with old actors - IMO it would look rather sad and silly. I don't mind cameos, but no more that that. Don't get me wrong - I loved all the actors; as for DJ - I'd watch him six ways from Sunday, even now when he is ageing... but preferably in some new films and shows. The "parallel world" from Michael Mann's movie, where Crockett and Tubbs exist in other time lapse and are played by other actors, also left me disappionted. As for a sequel with new younger actors and NEW CHARACTERS - ok, why not? Can't really say that I'm anxiously waiting for this to happen, not even sure that I'd watch it, but the whole idea is all right with me. Most probably it won't be as cool and popular as the original, which of course can't be recreated (and there's no sense in trying, I absolutely agree with Ferrariman on this point); but could possibly turn out to be a good modern cop show.

All do I dreamed/fantasized a lot about how the lifes of C & T and all the others after Free Fall would have gone I think the world is changed so much that a new MV series will never reach the vibe the original serie had.Actually I would love to make another ending then Free Fall to MV because I didn't like the ending. But then just in a paperstory and not on TV. There are only 2 actors who can play Crocket and Tubbs: DJ and PMT. Everbody else would not come near the chemistry they had together.

let's analize the ingredients that made MV a successful series and see what we can keep and what could be modified the right way to get the MV vibe againwhen i hear Miami vice first things that come to my mind are very very rich narco-traffickers who seem at a first sight out of reach ,then i think of the cops who are tuffs and good enought to reach these apparently out of touch bad guys i said cops but in my mind they are not necessary two . of course we all think of Crockett and Tubbs but i think it's possible on a pure theory level and with the sight to get some new stuff , it's not necessary to have two cops .Then what comes to my mind it's Miami city and it's tropical climate that make us think of a dream place (tropical places are often assimilated to cool places like the Caribbean , pacific islands ..) .then there are what i would call the goodies , goodie but few details that make MV to be MV : the dresses that will make the police officers be the top notch ones we know , and there's the Testarossa too it's a bit like a cherry on a cake , there were lot of cool cars in the 80s the F40 , the Countach but the Testarossa is the perfect car because of its very cool shapes and it fits well with Miami art deco too .And finally the musicSo what of all of these could be modified or keep to create something new and cool at the same timehere's my analisis which involves myself only :i think the narco-traffickers hunt line should be kept not in every episodes but as the series main line/background . the 2006 movie proved the subject is very prolificthe cops are how could i say a kind of dilemma , of course Crockett and Tubbs are a fantastic duet but i think if we want to recreate the series or make it rise from its ashes we should keep in mind the redundancy created by the too huge presence of the two cops . is such thing possible not to have Crockett and Tubbs always in the foreground , i'm optimistic myself so i answer yes but i think the solution will come from several ideas melt together . but i think that if we want to see MV back on TV one day there'll be some choice to be done to avoid the problems we all knowMiami city : it can't be ignored but if we want a revival of the series maybe a more Florida focused and not only Miami could be interestingthe dresses whatever there are two or more main caracters , class dresses are something cool that i would like to see in a new series and couture always rise from its ashes so no problems here . about the car i think we aren't that close so definitely yes i would like to see well dresses cops in beautiful cars myselfthe music : with a good scenarist or a good producer you can get something cool easilyconclusion of that brief analisis : i would see maybe a more Florida axed series but meanwhile keeping Miami as an important part of the scenarios . why not having different cops in different Florida area (Miami, Jacksonville..) and juggling with all these while keeping Miami and Crockett and Tubbs in a large part of the episodes . it's a bit messy maybe but at the same time if the solution was easy i would be in front of my TV delighting a new MV episode :)

I was thinking about this last night (while shaving 2 day old stubble, no less :p ), and an idea popped into my mind. Instead of focusing on Crockett and Tubbs, have a different duo in their place.Jesse Johnson could play the role of Billy Crockett with another partner (Tubbs' son?) You could have Don Johnson take Lt. Castillo's place. PMT could make cameo appearances as needed or even as the head of an investigative unit. While the series wouldn't focus on C&T, you could see what they did after they "retired."

Sounds fun. :) That's what I actually thought in the first place - leave Sonny and Rico alone! LOLBut as for DJ taking Castillo's place - I think there could be some difficulties... First - Sonny and Rico left the force in the end, and even moved out of Miami, or at least decided to... it would be kind of weird if Sonny returned to the same job again. If the show plot takes place at some other location... but then it won't be "MIAMI Vice" anymore. Second - I seriously doubt Don would like to play Sonny again... though there's no harm in dreaming anyway. :)
