Love at first sight

NEW LOCATIONS FOUND! House of Carol (you know the dildo specialist played by Lori Petty) and house of Tracy.

Today gotta be my lucky day. I tried to find lots of unidentified 4th season locations, sat down with the DVDs, and started with Love at first sight, but no luck. I started with the area around SW85 Street where airtommy found Lois house. No house with fitting long shaped pool with columns on the road side and L-shaped outer walls next to a T-shaped intersection. Then, I watched the episode again and tried to suss out the street sign when Crockett drives Carol home. The sign is very small and blurry and seems to say "SW 78". There is a fitting intersection of SW78 Ave and SW127 Street and - you will not believe it- the FBI agent even mentions this address as one of the murder scenes during the Ward Brothers song! Usually they always use wrong addresses, but not this time!

Great work, Tom!  I studied the scene where Crockett drives Carol home and I scanned all over for that configuration of roads and pool but i was stumped.   I'm kicking myself that I missed that huge clue from the FBI agent.  It reminds me of the real "for sale" sign with the correct address on it in "Tale of the Goat" and in "Stone's War" when Tubbs reads the address of the house they are at.

Thanks airtommy! Im very happy that I found it as it bugged me for more than 20 years. What I always overlooked was the dead-end sign next to the street sign when Crockett drives Carol home. It is still there and clearly identifiable due to its shape. When you know SW78 and dead-end Street plus figure in the „7777“ upon a hunch that both locations are the same it is easy to find!

There are still three major (not counting Hal‘s sign during Ward Brothers montage) locations in this ep still unknown: the video dating club, the murder scene with the iron gate and Foxy Boxers. With these I am stumped!

P.S. Carol‘s house was built in 1987 and was brand new at time of filming. The google street view pics are from April 2011. Worth half a million originally, the house lost half its book value from 1m in 2008 crisis and is now up again at 922k, approximately half of it for the land and half for the building.

Excellent work Tom.  You were also the one who found the LMD house years ago  - right?  I have a good memory for stuff like this but can't remember where I left my truck keys 10 minutes ago.

Thanks, miamijmf!

LOL I know what you mean :dance2:

I honestly don’t remember who found the LMD house first but I assume it was CGlide or airtommy. I was happy to find Manolo‘s villa, Pascal‘s Pascal Restaurant and the Kitchen Club among others.

Motivated by my new find, I gave the other unknown locations in this ep another try.

In The short scene where Crockett arrives at a murder scene with lots of yellow tape between the trees, there is also a dead end sign visible but no other significant clue. It is clearly not the 127street intersection and could be anywhere close to one of the 15 locations in this ep. The second unknown murder scene with iron gates is likely in South Beach due to vis a vis house looks but no more clues either. Video taping services is a modern rectangular shaped building with big glass fronts and a big park in front of the entrance. I fear these. Locations are doomed to stay unknown due to scarcity of clues.

Nice to see you posting here again Jeremy - quite a few new locations in Miami (& even LA) have been found in the last few months here.:)

It was filmed at night.  It must be near 7777 SW 127 St. or 8505 SW 53rd Ave because those scenes were filmed at night.  The dead end sign is a huge clue.  Also, note the unpaved driveway.

It doesn't look like South Beach to me.  It looks like the buildings in North Beach, in the vicinity of the puke scene on North Bay Village.  I hunted for it in person but couldn't find it.

I had the same thoughts but I did not find any match, neither another dead end street that fits as the intersection SW78Ave/127St is not it. Same for the North Bay village.

PS regarding location logistics the distance of the locations is a better hint than night time as production made mostly only two exterior location shootings per day (e.g. gas station scene and the cut Iggy Pop scene in Evan were the only two locations that day of filming) and Lois house and Carol house are quite far apart. Day length at end of November is quite short in Miami, around 10:30hrs with sunset around 6pm thus they could have shot that murder scene near any of the other locations.

The murder scene in the 18th minute seems to be an ordinary house, roofline somewhat unique in that it's not tilted toward the front.

Problem is that this kind of ordinary house is not to be found near the stylish houses used in this episode, thus not matching with our location clustering theory. ?(

If they drove miles just to film this snippet, then it’s like a needle in a haystack .

Looking near the two locations, I saw a bunch of houses at the beginning of dead end streets that were close but not a perfect match.  I'm confident we will eventually find this.

I am convinced that you can find it-but just do me a favor: if you find it, don’t keep it under your hat for a location trivia thread later on! :shout:

As to the Video dating club:

it has an exit sign above the door meaning that it is a public place with customers

it has a big park or similar around and in front of the entrance. No Highrises visible.

the building is a modern Bauhaus style with big windows, small window dividers, whitish color and most likely a flat roof

the hallway ceiling has the same reversed V shape pattern as the logo on the front desk

the hallway seems to have doors to the side and looks elusive

No signs or names anywhere

there are lots of monitors behind the front desk (huge front desk area!) and these do not appear as decorated by the production crew

which kind of business has such monitors and such spacy elusive premises with customer traffic and private rooms?

I am suspecting this could have been a beauty clinic or similar with a reverse V as the logo.

Anyone with other or better ideas?

PS needless to say I already searched for it with clues above but no find.

In the Starsky & Hutch episode "The Plague", they have a scene at Hal's Market Cafe.  This was located at 1327 E 7th Street in Los Angeles.  I watched it and took these pictures.  It doesn't look like our Vice location.

Maybe Gem is part of the name of the bar, as in "Hal's Gem."  If the green neon lettering at the top spells Hal's (kinda looks like it does) this could be the answer.

Yeah, but I've searched everywhere for Hal's Gem and come up with nothing.

I was starting to wonder if this was a jeweler (a very weird jeweler in a seedy part of town with neon signs), but the neon sign on the right says "Cocktails", so this is definitely a bar.

A considerable portion of that episode plays in Lois´ house. Thanks to airtommy and the house number visible in the episode we know that this was filmed at 8505 SW 53 Ave.

Unfortunately, this house was strongly remodelled (in my perception not much to its advantage) and scenes can be hardly matched to current interior, but it is worth looking at the interior as there is a bunch of great pictures by the realtor trying to sell the house in 2020 for 4+m USD.

The balcony where Lois was filmed is still there although guiderail has changed.

The windows don't have bars any more, so the neighborhood must have improved.  Looks like this is part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

One more thing I just noticed.  I was trying to find Hal's Gem last night and there is a unique pattern going horizontally across the building. The pattern  in your photo exactly matches the pattern we see at Hal's Gem.   Maybe you could walk around that area and look around for something that matches Hal's.  Unfortunately, we don't have many details to match up.

I think I found it, 5556 Santa Monica Blvd, which happens to be a cocktail place:

If that is it -it makes sense, sure looks a great candidate with the square box off centre of the front exterior.
The address of Side Show was 6818 Hollywood Boulevard (which is also stock footage from this episode). I spent some time looking for Hals on the ground two years ago in LA but on Hollywood Bvld. Here is Sideshow, similar design but more storeys than Hals’s and in central Hollywood where 5556 Santa Monica Bvld is East Hollywood.
