The Ferrari Daytonas of Miami Vice

eh maybe I'm getting my info mixed up with the tire size then, as I really like the tall thinner tire look of the cars back then in the 1960's to middle 70's era and I thought maybe with 235/60's that the rims seem to look a little small.

plus everything seems to have above 15 inch rims nowadays as camera put it.hmm maybe that's why I liked this one so much with the 16's, as its closer to the 70% tire height of the 215's on the real oneshttp://corvette.canney.net/webvettes...050/index.htmlhttp://corvette.canney.net/webvettes...049/index.htmland I just noticed that the wire wheels on the black one are bolt onsplus I found this recentlyand I actually found some place that sells the rims on this one, and these are 15 inch rims, 225s with a 70% tire heighthttp://www.akhwheels.com/pages/showWheel.php?pk=533http://www.akhwheels.com/pages/showWheel.php?pk=281and I thought maybe by the difference it had to be that the rims were the bit that seemed abit small, oh wait a minute, theres alot of low riders with the chevy impala's that used zenith/dalton wire wheels with 14 inch rims and when looking that up that's where I got that number.and apparently in the case of the 308 from the sound of this might have ran on 14'shttps://twitter.com/harrym_evo/status/398521555707113472/photo/1/largehttps://twitter.com/harrym_evo/status/401018182460112896

I don't believe there was ever a Corvette that left the factory with 14 inch wheels - they had 15 inch wheels from day one - being the 1953 Corvette. Fifteen inch wheels were standard for the Corvette through 1982. In 1984, the 16 inch wheels came along and, as was noted, several larger sizes have come along in more recent years. The open wheel-wells styling did not look right with wheels/tires smaller than 15 inch.A lot of the 60's cars did come with 14 inch wheels. My 67 Olds 442 has 14 inch wheels from the factory (chrome SS! wheels), and I have always thought that it would look better with larger wheels/tires - but I have kept it stock.

I believe the 308s had 14s the 308i' date=' 15s.[/quote']Yeah I seem to be finding references to both with the 308, it sounds like the euro spec cars are the ones that came with an option to upgrade to 15 inch tires running 220/55's
while normal euro spec and the US cars had 14's running the 205/70's.and okay then so other GM cars did come with 14's but the vette had 15's stock then and I gotta wonder if they also did that to add more space for the brakes back then with the C1 -3's ?as it mentioned in the C4 History Book that part of the reason for going with 16's was to add extra space for upgraded brakes on the C4, I think going from a 14 inch rotor to a 15. as the car was originally supposed to come with 16's along with having a T top set up for added stability for the roof and the chassis, but they decided against it and left it off.'Additonal: while I think of it, since I've never asked this before how wide are the 15 inch rims on the daytona? and do you know how wide they are on the normal vettes to contrast it?as from what I've been seeing it seems like the info on the Daytona ranges from a 7.5 inch to a 9 to 10 inch wide tire for the rear.

I know my friend had a 70SS and it came with 14 inch ralley wheels. My other buddies Charger came with 15's as it had ralleys also in the Magnum style with centre caps.I think it was a real crap shoot whether you got 14's or 15's on a particular vehicle in those days. I think it was because those were the most popular tires in production at that time. You mentioned the C4 getting 16's and yes that was a dramatic body style change as well as the first plastic car! ( I worked at a GM Dealership when they came out) These were rather wide stanse wheels and looked real cool. Nowadays you can get almost any size you want!I used to teach auto in highschool and sometimes I drove my 72 Ranchero to school. It was all stock with a factory 4 gear and ralley wheels. The students would always bug me about getting big rims and wheels and slamming it into the ground. I tried to explain to them that it was a very rare special GT model and worth much more money in stock condition as there was only 603 units ever built. They could not understand that If I put huge rims and tires on it that it would ruin the vehicle?????????I absolutely laugh my a$$ off when I see these kids with their 1995 Chevy with 21 inch rims and wheels on the car. I watched a guy try to get into a McDonalds one day and he had to turn...back up...and turn a second time to get in as his turning radius was practically non existent. But his car looked cool........(or so he thought)I don't like low profile tires. I think they are useless and my experience with them have been terrible. I believe in having a bit of a sidewall to any tire for flex and stability. Many of these low profile tires pop off the bead wen you turn a corner and go flat! I see this every day with Mercedes, BMW and Audi just to name a few.Cars need to have sidewalls to function properly for grip and traction.

Your comments were great and I totally agree about the low profiles and unnecessary mods to some of the cars I see. The huge oversized rims with the counter-rotating spinners in particular. For those who don't know here is the Ranchero.

Nice pic! It's just like mine!Mines is blue with a peacock blue stripe down the side of the body indent and a flat black hood with the dual scoops. Its an original GT with the four bolt 351C four speed with all the toys-factory AC,PW,PS etc etc etc.The only thing not stock on my vehicle is I put a Miloden Gear Drive instead of a timing chain in the block.

I do remember the photos, I might have them saved somewhere.also sonny with the rims on the daytona, how wide are the ones on yours, as I'm trying to figure out if theres any difference in the width of the rims vs the specs on the real one's borrani'sas they actually have a chart on there website that says how wide they were and the tire size used for them.http://www.borraniamericas.com/html/product_list.htmlthrew in a few of the daytona prototype also:

By width do you mean measuring the outer diameter of the wheel measured vertically, or do you mean the horizontal measurement from outer edge of the hub to the inside edge? The latter will be challenging to do without jacking up the car and removing a tire, I think.

uhh horizontal I think, the width from the outside of the rim to the inside, which I think is measured by inches and I think its marked on the rim itself.like they always talk about it as a 15x8 inch rim and its the second number I'm trying to figure out.

I will look for any markings but I don't recall seeing any on the Zenith wire wheels.

ah, yeah I'm curious as its one of the things I didnt think of when figuring out the tire size, as maybe a little wider rim would help give the tire wall a flatter taller profile.as I remember something about the Miura SV having 235's or 255's on the rear, but that was a 9 inch wide rim.

I have noticed that the early pictures of the Daytonas show the emblems in the wheels to be the Eagle rather than the Ferrari emblem. In some of the photos it's hard to see the emblem well but you can generally see if it is black or yellow. I'm not sure if one of the cars had the Ferrari emblems and the other did not or if they were changed during the filming.

I think they had those eagles all the time judging by that shot of your car from right after it was built http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Ferrari-Daytona-Spyder-McBurnie-Kit-Car-Photo-c3990-SX152K-/350837531030?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51af8be196 then right after its retirement from the show Carl or his brother switched it over to the black and gold ones, after he took those two other pictures of it judging by the photo shoot photo here with the Testarossa replica for S3 http://www.flickr.com/photos/slantedenchanted/8549758209/ http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/Two_Miami_Vice_Ferraris.jpg but it is worth noting that on the red one below it appears that it didnt start out with those rims and tires, and this I think Jurrasic said was Car 3 and this one appears to be it around the same time the photo of your car above was taken, judging by the look of the film http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Ferrari-Daytona-Spyder-McBurnie-Kit-Car-Photo-c3991-ST1RTF-/350837531240?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51af8be268 although I swear I think this is the same car just latter in its life judging by its dash, probably mid to late 80's, although something about the tires looks smaller. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Ferrari-Daytona-Spyder-McBurnie-Kit-Car-Photo-c3992-GTWI3Q-/290948429118?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43bde0b53e but the dash, its tucked up on the right hand side, the same way it seems to be on your car up close

Where did you get the top 2 photos? The top photo looks like it has the black eagle emblems and the second one looks like it has the yellow Ferrari emblems, but it is really hard to tell for sure.
