A great shot of all of the Miamarina circa 1983 just a year before Miami Vice was filmed. Notice the Wachovia/SE financial building nearing completion and the Citi Bank/ Intercontinental Hotel on Chopin just completed in 1982.

Oldest photo I have seen of Miami Beach, 1925.  The Flagler monument can be seen.

When first built it was also a sundial.

That's Star Island on the left, partially out of the shot?  Would love to see the southern tip in this photo further to the left.  42 Star Island was finished that year and was likely under construction or newly completed at the time of this photo.

The beautiful Grand Bay Hotel in Coconut Grove (“Cool Runnin’ “) in 1984. Built in 1982 sadly demolished, I was so pleased I managed to see this building in 2011. This is also a good article with many photos and information.

Unfortunately the farmacia on 8th Street and 36th Ave SW and the entire block is being demolished.  You see its distinctive yellow sign in the opening montage of the Pilot episode.  Supposedly it is to build a hi-rise and retail stores or a parking lot for Versailles.  80s Miami is going fast.  If you want to visit for the first time or return, don't wait long.

It's really gut-wrenching to see how fast and thoroughly Miami's past is wiped out: http://morphoto.com/paradise-evolution/paradise-lost

Watson Island, 1980s. The "Lady Susan" boat from the phone booth scene in the pilot. Quite likely the shore power hookup next to the woman's leg was used for the lights of the phone booth.

You can see why Miami is rated as the second fastest growing major city in the Country.  I think Las Vegas is first.

Thanks Dadrian.  No problem.  I was a little young to have taken photographs of Miami during WWII but I do have an old family photo of my Dad taken during the war in Miami Beach when he was taking an electronics course there.  Have never been able to place the hotel.  I'll look for generic WWII Miami Beach photos.

jpaul was interested in photos of the Miami area during WWII so here are a few.  Beach goers were treated to a tanker torpedoed by a Nazi sub.  Wish I could find a pic of that.  Interestingly the Miami Shipbuilding Corporation (Vice OCB) manufactured rescue boats called Miamis.  I have a pic somewhere.  They lost out on the PT boat contract but were the largest civilian employer in Miami.

Good sized MP force was apparently needed.

Amazing how much bigger the cruise ships have become.  So huge now I would be worried that they would topple over.

I am sad to see this section of boardwalk is now going. Seen in “Rites of Passage” and “Definately Miami” & will bring into line with North Beach.

Dadrian, that happened a few years ago when a cruise ship capsized off the coast of Italy.

Matt, I hear you about the old boardwalk but the new one is going to make bike riding and skating for skates (more customers etc) a much better experience.
